16.2.2. A competitor who can provide proof of having held a National ‘A’ Speed licence prior to 31.12.02 may upgrade it to a Speed National ‘A’ (OPEN) or International ‘R’ Speed licence on payment of the appropriate fee as detailed in Appendix 1, OR obtain Clerk of the Course’s signatures on the Upgrade Card at four Clubman, National ‘B’ or National ‘A’ Race, Hillclimbs or Sprints.
A Open was £94 this year vs £90 for a A

I applied for a National A Open in 2011.
I last had a licence in 1994 when I used a Pilbeam 2.8 Hart Turbo .
I told them I had used this car in the BHC back then, which I imagine they checked, and I was sent my new licence.
Very simple really.

I needed the usual signatures on the card and sent it off to the MSA with the money.
That was 7 years ago.

Its a bit farcical really. I last competed in 2007 when I held a Race National B and Speed National A Open. I kept the race licence on until 2011 and gave up paying after that, so they both lapsed. I'm building a car to compete again and expected it to be further forward than it is now, so spoke to the MSA to find out my options.

If I had applied for the race licence last year, I would still have it, but as it's now over 5 years, I would have to re-take my ARDS. So I opted for my old Speed National A. Theoretically, I could enter an F1 powered single seater in National events and all would be well. It's a bit like the born again bikers buying a modern superbike when they haven't ridden for 20 years. A lot changes over 10 to 20 years and I would love to think my skills haven't deteriorated since I last competed, but I'm sure they have.

Whilst I'm glad I can jump back in and enter pretty much what I like, I do think there should be some checks - maybe some observed runs or suchlike. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't seem to cause many problems, so I can't imagine things will change anytime soon.

I last rode a Lambretta in 1970, got a full license too.
Restored a Honda CB 175 the other year, but did my off-road provisional 'test' just to see how things were after 47 years.....
Passed! But decided to sell the lovely Honda and stick to 4 wheels.

Just knew it was wrong for me now.

Maybe after 20 years a person should do a School Day at a hill and get a signature?

Anyway, if the MSA got all strict about it we would moan like hell!
