Just a Little 205 Gti

Thought Id do a thread on the 205 we have at the moment. I know a few people have been confused this year between this and Colin Satchells 205 (Not the same car) as Colin has been racing the Midland hills this year.

So some might remember when this came on the scene back in 1988 with Reg Phillips behind the wheel. The car then changed owners in around 1990 with Willem Toet Who then teamed up with Richard Marshall. They very quickly from their back ground in F1 transformed the 205 into a high tech racer. Logging equipment was added all over the car from wind speed to suspension logging devices. The car achieved success up and down the UK and held many class Records during its campaign. Willem then moved onto a single seater and Richard and his wife drove the car upto 2010 where it was stored and changes made over the next few year.

When I started racing in class c2 at Prescott back in 2012 Richards name was always at the top of the class with his record time. I had always wondered what sort of car it was to reach that time of 45s.
Anyway cut short to 2013 I notice Richard comment on Prescotts Social media page so I sent him a message asking if he was the guy with the extremely fast 205.
So a few messages past and I found out he had turned to Horse riding and was looking at letting the 205 go. Unfortunately at the time we were racing our Escort so was not looking for another car but the thought of owning the 205 played on our minds. So towards the end of 2014 season we sold our Escort and made a date to view the 205. So this was the first sight of what was hidden in the garage.

After a real good look over the car we could see it wasnt a run of the mill 205. Im pretty sure we were there for nearly 2 hours going over the history and spec.
A deal was done there n then as we couldnt walk away from it, we left with a time frame for the car to be assembled for collection. So a few months later we made the 20min trip to collect the 205 along with a van full of spares.

The 205 was looking a little tired on the outside so we already had a few ideas what to do by the time we got home.

So because of how tired the body work was and keeping in thinking with light weight we decided to get the car wrapped. This is where big Shiny sticky sheets are applied with heat guns etc

Not a 5 min job but the results were stunning but it was too white. Time to break it up a bit with a be spoke printed design T16 style.
Wrap was done over a weekend by Vanguard Wraps.

This was around January 2014 and all I remember of that weekend in that unit was being very Cold!!!!

Darren, car looks fantastic. I remember the car at Shelsley in Toets hands with all the telemetry. A novelty at the time!!

I would be interested to know who did the wrap, as I am looking to get mine done over the winter??

Regards, Duncan

Next up was the driving position that really didnt suit my height ,Richard was a pretty short guy.
The gear stick was also very short to make it a quick shift type. But things had moved on since this was fitted and Satchell Engineering make an amazing bit of kit that bolts straight in.

So the stick is now near the wheel its a very short shift between gears with this kit which is great. The wheel is dished to bring it further back.
The light weight kevlar bucket seat was also moved forward. It has a very layed back position that seat but with the new parts its made it easier to drive.

Hi Duncan we used Vanguard Wraps who are in Rugby.
Heres some rare clips of the car in action back in the 90s with Toet peddling ! Should bring some memories back.
https://youtu.be/PVM3Y0Ez7oE

So with the outside done and some new polycarbonate windows we set out to make sure the fueling etc is all good. We had to source one of Tom New's engine heaters also because of how the cars set up.

Little flare on the badges to whats inside.

Everything all went to plan fueling was spot on the map was fine.
We took the car to Llandow for a bit of testing in March 2015 first drive of a Lhd car and it was pretty quick. I was enjoying a couple of laps with pitting checking the engine over then my father would jump in for a couple of laps.
It was all going well until I noticed a massive trail of smoke coming from the 205 while my Father was over the back of the track. He came in and straight away I knew it was bad news. Oil was everywhere all over the engine front bumper the lot . We removed the front bumper looking for a split hose or a loose fitting to the find the oil filter had come loose and just dumped the oil. The dry sump system emptied around 5L of oil and took us around 2 days to clean the engine and bay. We were pretty stumped as to why the filter came loose. It wasnt leaking ,was on the car when we bought it and didnt think anything of it. The engine is solid mounted so maybe vibrations or maybe it just wasn't tight enough.
The car was taken to R P Engineering who found a few span shells ,damaged rod and piston.
Because of how this engine is built to get max torque it has lots of one off items so its not been a simple off the shelf rebuild. Its been around 4 months so far and we are just waiting for some items to come back from machining before the rebuild.
We are both gutted and spent most of this year spectating while working on whats left of the car.

Nope llandow while testing Is when the damage was done. Because it had so much oil left in the tank we though the engine dry sump was still working. We had been entered into Prescott but by the sat practice we knew it was game over and engine had to be pulled.
