Barbon Sat 1st July - Cancelled!

Just received from the organisers, real shame, try again next season!

Dear competitor

Following an inspection of the venue this afternoon, it is with great regret that we have to advise that we have no option but to cancel this weekend’s Barbon Hillclimb.

There has been an unusually high volume of rain over the past few days which has resulted in the paddock becoming substantially waterlogged. Despite there being no further rain forecast until after the event, it is clear that the ground conditions will not recover sufficiently by Friday evening / Saturday morning to allow competing cars and their attendant vehicles, trailers etc to safely negotiate the paddock. Frustratingly, the course itself is in near perfect condition.

We have no doubt that you will share our disappointment at having to cancel and we can only apologise for making the announcement so close to the event, but we had hoped that things might improve in time to allow the meeting to go ahead.

We shall of course refund your entry fee in full, but we ask that you bear with us as it will take a few days to process all the transactions.

We are already looking at ways of tackling the land drainage issues at Barbon as we strive to improve this spectacular and challenging venue for the future.

Please acknowledge receipt of this message so we can be sure you know the meeting is cancelled.

Yours faithfully

Graeme Cornthwaite Phil Gough
Secretary of the Meeting Clerk of the Course

The paddock issue is the only thing that keeps me away from this fabulous hill.
My last visit was really hard in the paddock and the wife said enough.
That was about 4 years ago and I would love to run the hill again esp as my Lola is working now!
Not sure what you can do with such a steep sloping paddock but I for one wish you luck in solving it.
Graham.

Before the June event we had already been looking at possible ways of lessening the impact of the weather and had done some work to make the track itself drain better, which was successful in June.

But the problem is the paddock which is the first flattish bit of land at the bottom of the hill and forms a sort of saucer that collects the rainwater that works it's way down from the grassland above.
We have some thoughts (that aren't going to be cheap) but we need to find out what the ground is like under the surface before we do anything further. If solid rock is close to the surface, we may be snookered.

Spending our hard earned money on a venue that only sees 2 events a year (maybe 3 at some time in the future) doesn't really make financial sense, but having worked so hard over the past 6 years to rejuvenate the Barbon events we honestly don't want to walk away.
We want everyone to know we are doing everything we can to improve the venue, but with limited resources it's going to be tough, really tough, especially now we've lost the income that would have been generated by this year's National Championship meeting which had attracted the biggest entry list of Nat A competitors for many years.

Thanks everyone for the expressions of sympathy we have already received on our F/bk pages and direct by email - they don't solve the problem but they do make us feel it's still worth trying!
