Nope, it would just gain air! A quick bleed and it was back to normal. A new slave and all was find.

We did have a dead mastercylinder on another occasion, but that filled the dust boot with fluid and didn't take on air (I guess it self bled).

As we discussed at Castle Combe Simon I have a similar very annoying problem.
I just lose the clutch pedal and it goes to the floor and wont pump up.
The fluid level remains exactly as was, so no leak, and a simple bleed removes the air and its OK - for a while.
I put a new seal kit in the master cylinder - problem still there.
I bought a new slave cylinder - problem still there.
I bought a new master cylinder - problem still there.
I suspected it was a Chinese copy so stripped it down and put in new seals.
Its not quite as bad but at last event I lost half of the pedal and had to bleed it again.
Someone suggested that the fluid may be overheating and aerating but I am using a quality brand ?
